Pasta Pioneering

Cubs packs worked together to build structures with spaghetti and marshmallows this evening as part of our pioneering work

We also discussed what each pack would like to do in cubs this year to help plan our activities.

Beavers’ Night Hike

Beavers are planning our first hike of the year and just to make it more exciting, we’re doing it in the dark.
We are planning to walk the recently opened trail to St. Fechin’s Church in Ballisodare. To get to the start point, take the N59 out of Ballisodare, go past St Mary’s College and turn right to Woodbrook Heights. Park on the right. (54.211153, -8.512844 on Google Maps should show you where to park and where the walk starts).

For a night hike, the beavers need to bring some special equipment, as well as all of the stuff they might normally need. Here’s a list of things to bring:

  • Torch (check the batteries)
  • Hi-vis vest
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Warm clothes
  • A hat
  • Neckerchief
  • Drink
  • Suitable footwear
  • Change of clothes
  • Large plastic bag (bin bags are perfect for wet clothes)
  • First Aid kit (optional)
Tuesday night Beavers will meet at 7:00pm and collection time is 8:00pm.
Thursday night Beavers will meet at 6:30pm, collection time 7:30pm.

Cubs Registration

.Registration for 13th Sligo Ballisodare cub section will take place this Thursday 9th November in St John NS Ballisodare at 7.30 – 8pm

Places are very limited this year due to leader numbers – if you can’t attend on Thursday and intend on returning please let us know

We are not in a position to enrol any new members this year – places will just be for existing cubs and beavers moving into cubs

The registration cost is €50 most of which is insurance through Scouting Ireland – we will continue to operate the €2 subs contribution at each meeting

We will be meeting on Thursday evenings – venue and time TBC

Registration night for Scouts

A Registration Night will take place for the new Scout section on 7.30pm, Thursday, 28th September 2017.  Please see full details below:

 

Age: Scouts (must be at least age 12 / in 6th class by 1st Sept.)

Venue: Corhownagh hall (beside St. Bridgid’s Church, Corhownagh, Ballisodare)

Registration form: Print off and bring a completed Activities Consent Form 2017-2018 with you on the night

 

Parents of all current members must re-register their child for the coming year by completing the attached Activities Consent Form 2017-2018 and paying the €50 registration fee.

Depending on venue availability, we hope to start Scout meetings in the next few weeks (updates will be posted on this page).

If demand is greater than the number of places available:

Demand is often greater than the number of places that we have available.  If this is the case, we will take new applications on the night and then use the following to prioritise:

  1. Children of those who volunteer to help operate the group.

(E.g. As leaders / on a committee, etc.  The group operates on a totally voluntary basis, so people need to consider getting involved.)

  1. Children who have siblings already in the group.
  2. Children living in the Ballisodare area.
  3. Length of time on waiting list.

We also try to ensure to have a good balance between the number of boys and girls.

Getting involved as an adult volunteer:

If you would like to help out as an adult volunteer in one of our sections, please see full information on the commitment involved, as well as the relevant application form and Garda vetting form on this page.

Cost:

  • Annual registration fee of €50 (€45 of which goes directly to Scouting Ireland nationally)
  • Uniform (costs €76.50 – order directly from The Scout Shop here – need Scout trousers, belt, shirt, lanyard)
  • Weekly subs of €2
  • Occasional activity costs for hikes, camps, etc.

However, we would not like money to be a barrier to Scouting, so please talk privately to one of the leaders if you would like to discuss alternative arrangements.

Helping out as a leader

Beavers and Cubs cannot start back this year until after Halloween as unfortunately, we do do not have enough trained leaders for all of the sections.  We would ask all parents / guardians to consider helping out – please don’t leave it to others.

If you are willing and able to help, please contact the Beavers / Cubs section leaders and we can send on the relevant forms to you.  There is a process then in relation to Garda vetting and IMG_2985meeting with potential leaders to see if being a leader is for them.

WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT INVOLVED?

The normal Scouting year runs more or less in line with the school year. During this time, we normally have one activity per week, including:

Weekly Beavers / Cubs meetings:

Either on a Tuesday or a Thursday evening.

Hikes:

About once a month, we have a hike instead of a weekly meeting, usually on a Sunday morning.

Overnights:

In recent years, we have held two overnights per year –

one indoor (around November, for one night) and one camping (in June, for two nights).

Training:

All leaders must be trained in basic Scouting skills and child protection guidelines.

This involves initial local meetings with existing Group leaders and one overnight residential.  (The next residential weekend takes place from Saturday 21st – Sunday 22nd October.)  All training costs are covered by the group.

Planning meetings:

About once per term, we have a meeting (about 1 ½ hours) to plan activities for the next term.

What if I can’t make it to a weekly Beavers / Cubs activity?

It is recognised of course that other commitments can intervene, such as work, family, etc.  As such, we try to ensure that we have enough leaders in total in each group so that we are covered when someone cannot attend for various reasons.  We would ask though that you text the section leader in advance when you know that you will not be available for an activity.

Cubs – Lough Keel Cub Camp – Aug 2017

We had a great weekend in lough Keel – Camp ground to ourselves, wonderful bunch of kids, great singers , dancers ,  joke and story tellers. We spent the whole day saturday up at lough Gara doing loads including

  • Archery
  • BB guns
  • Falconry
  • Horse Riding
  • Animal Grooming
  • Obstacle Course

Cub Camp – Lough Keel – Aug 2017

The Church Group is camping at  Lough Keel on their annual 2-night camp from 18th-20th Aug

Please read letter attached and fill in the consent form

The form and fee needs to be handed in on arrival to the camp at 7pm on Friday 18th Aug

Please inform the leader team of any medical issues as you will need to fill in the medications form
